Some ATAD exchange programs have been established for over 40 years while others are relatively new. Each program offers the student a family living experience that can vary as widely as living in any kind of home in the United States. Students can select from summer, semester, and year programs, depending on the country of interest. Going on a year program as a "thirteenth year abroad" (after graduating from high school and before attending college) is a popular option.

Students should read the descriptions of each program and select the one that best suits his or her background and desires. Remember, the choice should not be based on the opportunity for special excursions or sight-seeing trips. Changes in international conditions may make these available one year but not the next. Some programs are very popular and may have more applicants than spaces available to send students. Serious consideration to a second country choice should be made by all applicants in case a program may not be available for the upcoming year.
